The FREE (Financial Resilience for Economic Empowerment) GROW Fund opens its first call for applications on 10 July 2024!

The FREE GROW Fund specifically focuses on women that are empowered to thrive in agricultural value chains by advancing gender equality and promoting economic and climate resilience. FREE GROW invests in local organisations that use intersectional approaches to advance gender equality in agricultural communities connected to global value chains. The first iteration of FREE Grow will focus specifically on women and girls in the floriculture, tea, and coffee sectors in East Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania).

The FREE GROW Fund aims to support women and girls who live in floriculture, tea, and coffee communities in East Africa, with a specific focus on women who are economically engaged in these sectors as workers, farmers and/or entrepreneurs*. Particularly, women and girls from underrepresented and vulnerable groups. For example: migrant workers, young mothers, and people with disabilities. All registered non-governmental organisations, groups, collectives, and networks with a focus on the rights of girls and women, and who have demonstrable experience working in flower, tea, and/or coffee communities in East Africa are welcome to apply.

FREE GROW applications open 10 July - 26 July 2024

The vision is that through this fund, women are empowered to thrive in agricultural value chains through advancing gender equality practices and promoting economic and climate resilience.

For more information about eligibility criteria and how to apply, visit the FREE Fund website or email at freefund@womenwin.org for more information.

Women Win is excited to share new research on “Understanding Drivers and Prohibitors of Women Garment Workers Mental Health and Wellbeing” in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, in collaboration with local partners: CCIHP in Vietnam, Family Planning Association in Sri Lanka, and Karmojibi Nari in Bangladesh.

This study was funded by lululemon and conducted in collaboration with the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW). The research intentionally employed a participatory approach by engaging local women garment workers, women’s rights organisations, mental health experts, and researchers in each of the three countries to elicit contextual knowledge and grounded realities about:

  • Unique aspects of mental health, beyond general well-being, with a focus on women garment workers
  • What constitutes positive mental health and wellbeing for women garment workers, and
  • Key determinants of mental health and wellbeing in the garment factory setting, according to women workers.

This research brief is intended for brands, suppliers and industry partners that want to understand more about the state of women’s mental health and wellbeing in Asia’s garment industry. The work contributes to the existing knowledge base that looks at worker mental wellbeing beyond basic wellbeing. It also provides a unique insight into this space centering women’s voices while using a newly developed ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing Key Indicators Framework’.

Our hope with this brief is to elevate the conversation on the critical nature of worker mental health and wellbeing among brands, suppliers, and other industry partners. If you are interested in joining this conversation, please reach out to us directly to get involved.

Read our article about Women's Economic Empowerment and Resilience's definition

Women’s economic empowerment (WEE) basically means enabling women to earn a decent living. It has taken on a variety of definitions and sometimes, even at the highest levels, is used without definition (e.g. the Beijing Platform for Action, or the 2017 UN High Level Panel reports on WEE). Proponents differ in defining the how and why to achieve WEE. How to tackle the wicked problems of poverty, exclusion, exploitation and gender inequality? And ‘why’?

Women Win’s brand Win-Win Strategies commissioned Equileap to assess 100 public companies listed in the Netherlands on their gender equality performance. The findings indicate:

  • Two-thirds of the companies offer transparency on social supply chain topics, but very little data is available on how these companies approach gender equality in the supply chain.
  • While Dutch companies are becoming more transparent and performing better on gender equality in their workforce, there is not much evidence that this is being extended to their supply chains.

In this article, Supraja Suresh analyses the Equileap findings and highlights ways in which Dutch companies can use this research to better their supply chain practices.

“Every day, we realise that we have emerging issues, and as a progressive industry, we cannot bury our heads in the sand. One of those areas is gender; specifically women empowerment. It is always a pleasure for us to work very closely with women-led organisations…and look at areas such as women empowerment, gender mainstreaming, violence, women rights at the farm and within the environment in which they work.” -Clement Tulezi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Flower Council (KFC)

Research done by our partners Ufadhili Trust has highlighted the need for the flower sector to prioritise women empowerment programmes in collaboration with all stakeholders in the industry.
