The sun is beginning to set in Philadelphia, and Elaine, the founder of Latinas in Motion, is lacing up her running shoes. She has been looking forward to her run all day. With each step, she sheds her labels and responsibilities and finds solace and freedom. Thousands of miles away, Nantito, a coordinator for Amazing Maasai Girls Project in Laikipia, Kenya, enjoys a couple more hours of sleep before she has to wake up to tend to her morning chores, after which she will head out on her morning run. In Ethiopia and Iraq, Tihitina and Ruba are dreaming about running with their friends and their upcoming races.

Each of these women represent one of the four Spark Change Program partner organizations. These organizations – Latinas in Motion, Amazing Maasai Girls Project, Free to Run, and Girls Gotta Run Foundation – use running as a tool for community building, women’s empowerment, and physical and mental wellbeing. Alongside life skills and leadership development these organizations tap into the power of running to create safe spaces for girls and women to become agents of change in their communities.

Latinas in Motion (LIM) was founded with the intent to increase the representation of Latina women in running communities throughout the U.S. Through their local chapters around the country, LIM encourages, inspires, and empowers Latinas through the power of running. Free to Run (FTR) works in some of the most challenging regions of the world, where women have suffered extreme social isolation, harassment, and unequal access to education and health resources. Their program combines running with leadership and wellbeing skills to advance gender equity and drive change in community gender norms. Girls Gotta Run Foundation (GGRF), based in Ethiopia, and Amazing Maasai Girls Project (AMGP), based in Kenya, combine running with scholarships to encourage continued education in regions with high school dropout rates of adolescent girls. These programs demonstrate that investing in girls when they are most vulnerable can have a lasting impact on their leadership skills, understanding of their rights, and financial resiliency of their families.

Despite different approaches and geographies, these organizations, their coaches, and their participants demonstrate the power of running as a tool for girls’ and women’s empowerment on a daily basis. In the locations where these organizations implement programs, running, and sports in general, are not often seen as a “women’s domain.” Just by running in public, these women are participating in a form of rebellion and are challenging gender norms. When asked how running makes them feel, the most common responses included words such as free, strong, and confident. These words demonstrate that the benefits of running are more than just physical health and speak to its power to build strong leaders and communities.

Ruba has been a participant with FTR since early 2023. She and her family are among the more than 400,000 Yazidis who were forced to leave their home in Sinjar, northern Iraq, during the war against ISIS. Ruba’s family has been internally displaced in Iraq since 2014, and now  live in Duhok. When asked what running means to her, Ruba shared,

Ruba, Free to Run, Duhok, Iraq
“Running through Free to Run has had a transformative impact on my community, particularly for girls and women. It has provided us with a platform to challenge societal norms and stereotypes, empowering us to defy expectations and pursue our passions. Through running, we have found a sense of solidarity and sisterhood, supporting and uplifting each other every step of the way.”

Suzette, co-lead of LIM, further captures the transformative journey of running, “Running to me is freedom and a celebration of what my body can do […] Running has given me therapy; it’s almost like meditation and a genuine way to relieve stress. Above all, it has given me sisterhood in the Latinas in Motion and lifelong friendships.” This sense of sisterhood and camaraderie contributes to a powerful cycle of inspiration and empowerment and builds a sense of belonging. As women and girls connect, share, and support each other, they build collective strength and inspire others. This ripple effect spreads beyond their immediate circle, reaching other girls and women in the community.

In the Southern region of Ethiopia, an average of just 16% of girls complete secondary school, so when Tihitina chose to continue her education through GGRF – with the goal of graduating – she was already defying the odds. She reflects on qualifying to compete in a regional competition and traveling outside her hometown to run for the first time, “The nine of us from GGRF were the only girls representing Wolaita Soddo at the entire athletic event. It was really a thrill. You can see my smile below (Tihitina is 3rd from right). Two of my teammates won medals, and I was happy and proud to be there, showing that I can be strong and part of a team of girls who can run fast.”

Girls Gotta Run Foundation, Wolaita Soddo

When asked about running in Laikipia, Kenya, Nantito shared that she is often discouraged from running by her family and friends, but that the other AMGP alumni and Catherine Ndereba, an esteemed Kenyan Olympian, serve as role models and inspiration for her and the girls in the program. In places where women are not afforded the same freedoms as men, it can be hard for girls to see themselves reflected in leaders. These programs are breaking barriers towards gender equity by introducing female role models and leadership pathways to girls in their communities.

The profound impact of these organizations extends beyond individual experiences to community building. Through shared experiences, mutual support, and collective empowerment, participants and coaches become sources of motivation for everyone involved. Witnessing female role models and peers break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and pursue their passions inspires others to do the same. This empowerment from within the community creates a positive feedback loop, where each success story fuels the aspirations of others, leading to a continuous cycle of growth and empowerment.

Since 2021, the Spark Change Program has connected Latinas in Motion, Free to Run, Girls Gotta Run Foundation, and Amazing Maasai Girls Project to share learnings, best practices, and knowledge in addition to supporting the organizations through unrestricted funding. Over the past 3 years, these four organizations have directly impacted over 2,500 girls and young women in their communities through their running and leadership programming.

Suzette Rodriguez, Latina in Motion, Philadelphia, USA

The stories of Elaine, Suzette, Ruba, Nantito, and Tihitina, although from different corners of the world, paint a picture of running not just as a physical activity but as a symbol of empowerment, resilience, and community. Whether it’s finding freedom on solo runs, bonding with fellow runners, or using running as a tool for personal and collective growth, these women exemplify the transformative power of putting one foot in front of the other, step by step, mile by mile.

In every walk of life, women, girls and non-binary persons are left out of view, out of focus and more often than not we only see the world through the view of those in power. That’s why at Women Win we launched a Multimedia Contest celebrating all the girls, women and non-binary people we serve with the launch of a photo and video contest to make their lives more visible in a year in which they have been (again) deeply impacted by COVID-19. In this Exhibition, you will find the winners and finalists of the contest.

We hope you enjoy it!

We believe there’s still a lack of visibility of women, girls and other marginalised genders taking action and full ownership of their lives in the sports and work environment. Our main objective with this initiative was to gather more visual references of empowered girls, women, and gender non-conforming people to share with the world and inspire others.

  • Host: Women Win

  • Where: Worldwide

  • Themes: Women, Girls, Marginalised genders, Leadership, Work, Community, Empowerment and Sports

  • Eligibility: Open to adult (aged 18 or above) women and non-binary amateur and professional photographers and videographers

Launching a free comic book about periods for children and educators.

As part of our collaboration with Puma x Modibodi, we are launching this free-to-download comic book that will help educators to talk about menstruation with kids.
While menstrual education is very much needed among children of all genders, talking about periods is still a taboo. Many educators and families find it hard to create a safe space for everyone to discuss menstruation with preadolescents.
Together with our implementing partners, we’ve been using sport as a tool to discuss periods with the participants of our programs.
In all countries where we provide menstrual health education, participants have reported being better able to manage menstruation, challenge taboos, understanding that it is a natural process and that there’s no reason to feel ashamed, and that it should not restrict anyone from engaging in activities they enjoy, such as playing sports. In this comic book, you will meet Olivia, a girl that experiences having her period for the first time. Olivia is here to make everyone feel comfortable talking about their period. Her story is one of many. Thanks, Olivia for sharing your story.
Girls stop practicing sports while having their periods due to:
  • Fear of leakage
  • Little time to shower/wash after exercise
  • Feeling weak and/or in pain
  • Lack of confidence in their ability to manage periods

Calling all young women and non-binary people with a passion for skateboarding and a powerful idea to get more young people on boards in Europe!

For the third year in a row, Skateistan and Women Win are teaming up to support women and non-binary leadership in skateboarding and inspire the next generation to be empowered, active and healthy.

The ROLL Models programme is designed to support and create visibility for diverse young skaters across Europe based in: Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain or the United Kingdom.

We’re currently seeking applications from young women and non-binary people (aged 18-30) who have an idea for a project that will use skateboarding to improve the physical and mental well-being of girls and non-binary children (aged 5-18) and promote gender equity. The ROLL Models programme is a unique opportunity for women and non-binary people with a passion for skateboarding to connect with and support each other.

For this year, we are excited to announce that as well as recruiting new ROLL Models, we will also be providing renewal grants for ROLL Models from previous years!

Selected ROLL Models candidates will receive:

  • A seed-grant of up to €3000 to fund their project idea
  • A place at our ROLL Models Leadership Camp in Berlin** (Depending on COVID-19 travel restrictions)
  • Support and guidance from Skateistan and Women Win

How does it work?

Approximately 20 young women will be selected to attend our ROLL Models Leadership Camp in Berlin, where they will take part in leadership and skateboard programming workshops, develop their project ideas, and connect with other ROLL Models from around Europe. All ROLL Models will then receive a seed-grant towards their project, as well as ongoing guidance from Skateistan and Women Win. Approximately €33,000 in grants will be awarded to the selected ROLL Models in 2022.

We are also pleased to announce that our ROLL Models Advisory Board continues and this year’s ROLL Models will be selected by this Board, composed of 5 previous ROLL Models from 2020 and 2021.

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • Identify as a woman or non-binary, aged 18-30 years old
  • Be based in one of the following countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain or the UK
  • Have an idea for a project to empower girls through skateboarding
  • Be available to attend our ROLL Models Leadership Camp in May (exact date TBD)

Guidelines for project proposals:

  • Proposed project activities must take place between 1 May and 30 September 2022
  • Projects should work with girls, young women or non-binary people aged 5-18 years old
  • Applicants can apply for one of two seed-grant amounts;
    • €1500 – for individual applicants, not affiliated with an organisation/group
    • €3000 – for applicants that are either staff or volunteers of an existing organisation/group

We look forward to hearing about you and your idea through our short application form (details below), and please share this with any other young skaters out there who have ROLL Model potential!

How to Apply:

Use this link to complete and submit the short application form.

If you have any issues in submitting your application or have any additional questions, then please email rollmodels@womenwin.org with the subject ‘ROLL Models Application’.

While the Leadership Camp and ROLL Model activities will be carried out in English, we can support with interpretation if required. Please let us know in your application form if you require this.  You can find more answers to common questions and full application details on our FAQ.

We are keen to make the ROLL Models programme as inclusive as possible and actively look to support all cis, trans, non-binary and all other underrepresented groups and communities such as black, indigenous, people of colour, LGBTQI+, refugees and migrant girls and women with or without disabilities.

Applications are open until Friday, 4th March 2022

Women Win is proud to announce our role as one of the first partners behind a new global movement to reshape sport and development in response to COVID-19. As a first step, the International Platform on Sport and Development (sportanddev) is hosting a global campaign calling on more stakeholders to join them in seeking new solutions to the pandemic.

The campaign is aimed at reshaping sport to better serve all in society and demonstrate the contribution of sport and physical activity at this critical time, as global actors seek new solutions and remedies to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sport can play a vital role in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and promoting equity, access, and inclusion in society. However, many challenges remain, with much work to be done to ensure a level playing field. Our world has changed dramatically and rapidly. COVID-19 has exposed the fault lines in society, exacerbated inequities and challenged the way people design, deliver and participate in sport.

The campaign will include a call for articles from the diverse sportanddev community, an interactive webinar and final report summarising themes and key actions. There will also be community consultations to input into the development of an upgraded sportanddev platform, in order to increase collaboration, coordination and ultimately impact of sport’s role in society. We aim to raise 200,000 US dollars to help build a more inclusive and equitable sport and development sector.

How can you support?

You can join and support this campaign in a range of ways (including in-kind contributions). Partners will receive various benefits, including branding and visibility.

Find out more about the campaign and the benefits of joining

To join as a partner of the campaign, or for more information, please contact: Paul Hunt, Senior Project Manager, sportanddev: hunt@sa4d.org

Deadline to join: 31 October 2021

  • To put front and centre voices from the global south that can provide a better understanding of the status of indigenous girls and women practicing sport
  • To bring awareness on the barriers indigenous women and girls face in accessing sport and the creative solutions grassroot groups have taken

About We Are Onside

We Are ONSIDE is a series of gatherings and conversations that explore the intersection of feminism and advocacy in the sport for gender justice movement. The aim is to bring together feminist voices from the global south to better understand and highlight the work being done on the ground in local communities and learn more about a cross-sector feminist movement that reimagines sport, transforming intersectional discrimination, oppression and inequalities in order to advance gender justice in local and international sports systems and structures.
